Month 9 – GSM & Action Research Cycle 1

Describe the methods you used to collect cycle 1 data.

My evaluation and assessment tools included field notes, video, pre-tests, pre-survey and reflection/progress notes from the students.  I utilized Google Forms, MS Word, Cacoo for Hangouts, Screenflow, Google Hangouts and Edmodo to capture and record data.

Describe, synthesize and compare the data found for cycle 1 and cycle 2.

On the pretest, an average score of 89% was submitted with all 21 participants.  In the pre-survey, most students felt they were proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, Edmodo, Google Hangouts and MS PowerPoint.  Out of 16 who answered the question, 70% felt they were proficient in Cacoo and 0% in Asana.  Based on the data collected, participant felt that working in groups were beneficial to team development and that technology should be used in a group formation, development and project.  Most liked working in groups although did prefer to work alone under self guided direction.

Some of the comments made were:

I love working in groups because it gives everyone a chance to share their ideas and their is not as much work.



Sometimes working in a group can get difficult and its easier to work alone.



I am used to working alone and I work more efficiantlly alone without interuptions from other members of a group, but, I can work well in a group.



I like working in a group because everyone can share their ideas but then it can lead to an arguement.



I like working in groups because when someone needs help you could help them and if you need help they will help you.

On the post-test 16 participants submitted a quiz on Edmodo which garnered an average of 86%

My Cycle 1 provided insight that while in theory improving communication through technology is achievable, in practice, technology has to be finessed in a way that is conductive to the environment.  The students were able to improve communication by utilizing technology to create better communication, team building, team development and formation, it was difficult for the researcher being states away and need to juggle work, family, school, time differences, school politics, absences and failing technology to achieve an outcome.

Comments I received from participants were varied but overall seemed to achieve the expected outcome:

I liked working in groups with cacoo. It’s Easier and more exciting. – M.J.


I think that cacoo is fun because you can work in groups while you’re in a different class. I like doing projects on cacoo. We should use it more. – N.H.


I think that cacoo is very interesting because groups could work together and it can get imbeded and shared. I think it is very good for projects and assesments. We shoulld do offten. – G.D.


My feeling about cacoo are not very good because you are not always able to connect with other people like if you lose your email information you will not be able to connect with friends. Other than that I mostly like it. I really wouldn’t want to use it again. – N.H.

Draw a connection to Gaming Motivation & Strategies

As part of our introduction to Gaming Motivation and Strategies, Dr. Siegel assigned us to watch a TED talk by Jane McGonigal entitled Gaming Can Make a Better World. In this talk, Dr. McGonigal proposed that gamers are good at “weaving a tight social fabric” and suggested that this strength could be leveraged in solving real-world problems.  Communication is a key factor in the gaming world.  The use of games in digital collaboration has many facets and could be beneficial to my Action Research.
